Root of All Evil is a real-time puzzle game made in 48 hours at Global Game Jam 2023. You manage the roots of a tree made of pure evil, guiding them to spread across the play area and absorb nutrients until the tree finally blossoms. We entered it into the GDWC 2022 Student Game Awards and reached the global top 5, competing against entries with significantly longer development times
The jam version tied the camera directly to whichever root the player was controlling, with Tab used to cycle between them. As the number of active roots grew and spread across the play area, the camera jumping back and forth every time the player switched would become disorienting. Shortly after the jam ended I rebuilt the system: players can now scroll freely with the mouse wheel and click directly on any root to take control of it. Pressing Space snaps the camera back to the currently active root and re-enables follow mode until the scroll wheel is touched again. A small change in terms of code, but it made the game significantly more comfortable to play at scale.
